Experience the Transformative Power of Music with Purpose
On May 11, join the Kendall Square Orchestra for an extraordinary evening where artistry meets impact at Boston’s historic Symphony Hall. Symphony for Science 2025 unites music, storytelling, and action to address homelessness in Boston. Held at Symphony Hall on May 11, this event raises critical funds for Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP), which provides life-saving medical and mental health care to over 10,000 individuals annually.
The evening features performances by the Kendall Square Orchestra, acclaimed violinist Julie Leven (Founder of Shelter Music Boston), and the Women’s Chorus, an inspiring ensemble including singers from Boston-area shelters, amplifying voices from the very community this event supports. The program also includes thought-provoking discussions with Dr. Jim O’Connell (President of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program), Kevin Adler (Founder of Miracle Messages), and Dr. Howard Koh (former U.S. Assistant Secretary for Health and Professor at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health), as well as performances of Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, and moving choral selections.
Boston Healthcare for the Homeless Program
Fresh out of medical school, Dr. Jim O’Connell expected a traditional medical career. Instead, he found his life's work on the streets of Boston, where a simple act of washing feet became the foundation of a new approach to homeless healthcare. What began as a short assignment grew into a 40-year mission rooted in compassion, dignity, and unwavering commitment. As founding physician and president of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, Dr. O’Connell pioneered the nation’s first medical respite program, proving that true healing begins with humanity. His work has transformed countless lives, and the stories speak for themselves.
